Rene, I don't believe that "know it all newbies" are the main reason some people hate Linux. From my experience it's more to do with simple things not working -i.e., video not being detected, mice not working, sound not working, problems with wifi connections, etc.

I reached the stage of Windows frustration that I was finally prepared to deal with the issues, but most people are going to give up before wasting time reading a multi-chapter HOWTO.

My switch to openSUSE 11.1 was based on the need for a better KDE experience, and the few issues I began to have with Mandriva's packaging. My predictions on the future of the company are based on their sackings and apparent financial difficulty, as well as my perception of their mindshare in the Linux community. I would rank Mandriva below Ubuntu, openSUSE, Debian, and Fedora.

>Given that Mandriva fired one of their most valuable >employees recently, I think the writing is on the wall for >that distro, sadly.

Wow, youve been using Linux for a whole year and you can make predictions on Mandriva's future?
This is the reaons people hate Linux know it all newbies.

I dont think Adam Williamson's job should have been abolished because of its importance but why dont you read Adam's opinions on this on his site http://www.happyassassin.net
where you will notice he is still active in Mandriva community.
Instead of reading 3rd hand FUD, seems more intelligent to take the fired guy's side which isnt what one might 'think' it is.

BTW, this Mandriva is not ready to switch my folks from PCLinxOS2007 but when they have KDE4.2 it looks like it will.

I did find the MCC very useful and it came to the rescue many times, but the YCC just seems to look more polished than anything. One particular thing I like is that each item isn't listed in the form of a sentence and it just says what it is. The sentence-style for each item in MCC is a bit like the new Windows control panel - designed for utter morons that can't figure out what "Software Management" might actually mean. But that's only a minor annoyance in the scheme of things.

Regarding the "intended" way to install Apache, that's all good and well, but when one is looking through rpmdrake and sees something called "Apache" one can be forgiven for thinking that it might result in a working web server. At the very least it should pop up one of those co-dependency screens where you have to choose which MPM you want. By not doing this Mandriva are simply making it easy for people to stuff up, and blame Mandriva (which they'd be right to do in this case). I never did see a web server configuration wizard in drakconf, but maybe I didn't have the patience to read through all the sentences next to each icon to find it :-)

"3) YAST is one of the best thing that opensuse got, no other distro has got something similar to YAST (not to mention webmine)"

Mandriva has the Mandriva Control Center, which is very similar. And it doesn't re-write every configuration file on the system each time you change one small thing ;)

Kool, the problem that you specify are mainly related to your hardware (mouse and CD burner)

2) you can install VLC with single click from packman (no problem here huh :)

3) YAST is one of the best thing that opensuse got, no other distro has got something similar to YAST (not to mention webmine)

good point here is ” But I’m not going to back to Windows. No way! ”

Good post
Thanks
